He has been ranked as high as No. 9 in the world, first achieving that rank on March 2, 2009. His highest doubles ranking is No. 243, reached on June 3, 2006.
He made his ATP debut in 2004, leaping nearly 700 spots in the rankings to 239th. He climbed another 200 spots in 2005 to finish as the No. 3 Frenchman, reaching the fourth round at Miami, the third round at Wimbledon and winning his first ATP title in Sopot.
In 2006, he suffered with back, ankle and foot injuries, but still finished the year ranked No. 46. His best Grand Slam came at the French Open as he finished in the fourth round, defeating American James Blake before falling to Novak Djokovic.
He climbed to No. 38 in 2007, reaching the third round of the Australian Open. In 2008, he jumped to No. 14, his first time in the Top 20 as he won a career-best 30 matches. After starting the year 5-7, he reached the semifinals of the French Open, defeating No. 5 David Ferrer along the way before falling to Roger Federer. He missed Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury, but reached the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics and the fourth round of the US Open.
He moved one spot to 13th at the end of 2009, the No. 2 Frenchman in the world (behind Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga). He won a career-best 42 matches and claimed the title at Metz. He also won more than $1 million for the first time in his career.
In 2010, he reached the semifinals at Brisbane and the third round of the Australian Open. He missed two months between March and May with a hand injury, and returned to fall in the second round of the French Open, then the third round at Wimbledon.
